Developing Teams Through Strengths: Understand Your People, and Everything Changes
As a team leader, have you ever felt this way?
Your team members keep clashing with each other. Some seem disengaged, no matter how hard you try to motivate them. Others appear resistant, struggling to get along with their peers. And at some point, you start feeling exhausted—like you’re the only one trying to pull the team forward.
I get it. Because this is exactly what so many team leaders experience.
.
Your team isn’t bad… but you might not truly understand them—yet.
From Braveway’s experience working with many organizations, we’ve seen countless leaders who are doing their best, yet still feel like their teams aren’t moving in sync. The main reason? They’re managing people from their own point of view.
Many leaders apply the same “one-size-fits-all” approach to everyone—communicating the same way, managing the same way, giving feedback the same way—forgetting that people are different.
Some crave recognition.
Some value freedom.
Some need clarity.
Some simply want trust.
That’s why understanding each person’s inner drive matters even more than giving the perfect command.
.
Getting to Know CliftonStrengths (formerly StrengthsFinder)
CliftonStrengths is a human potential assessment developed by Donald O. Clifton, an American psychologist often called the Father of Positive Psychology.
He started with one simple but powerful question:
“What would happen if we stopped asking what’s wrong with people—and started asking what’s right with them?”
That question changed everything.
Clifton and his research team at Gallup developed a tool called StrengthsFinder, later renamed CliftonStrengths to honor its creator.
The assessment identifies each person’s natural patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior, known as Talent Themes — 34 in total. Here are a few examples:
- Empathy – The ability to understand and connect with others’ emotions.
- Analytical – The tendency to think critically and seek logical answers.
- Communication – The talent for expressing ideas clearly and engagingly.
- Responsibility – A deep sense of ownership and commitment to doing what’s promised.
- Adaptability – A flexible, here-and-now person who flows easily with change and supports others along the way.
And the best part?
No two people share the same combination of strengths. In fact, the chance of having the same Top 5 strengths in the same order as someone else is just 1 in 33 million.

.
How Does CliftonStrengths Help Team Leaders?
CliftonStrengths doesn’t just tell you what each team member is good at — it helps you understand why they think, speak, and act the way they do. And when you understand yourself and your team members at that level, you can start to communicate, delegate, and lead in ways that truly resonate with each person.
Leaders who use CliftonStrengths begin to see that:
- Every team member has a unique talent.
- When used effectively, that talent becomes a strength.
- But when overused or misdirected, it can turn into a weakness.
- A leader’s role is to help guide each person to use their talent productively.
- Many “problems” aren’t about attitude—they come from differences in how people naturally operate.
- You can assign roles and responsibilities based on each person’s strengths.
- You can empower each team member in a way that matches their motivation.
- You can communicate and give feedback in a style that fits each individual.
For example…
You might have a team member who seems overly cautious—someone who always asks many questions and hesitates to take action. But in reality, they may have strong Analytical theme. They’re not trying to argue with you; they simply need enough information and time to make the right decision.
When you start seeing your team through this lens, understanding replaces judgment — and true collaboration begins to take shape naturally.
.
Teams Built on Strengths Are More Powerful Than You Think
Gallup’s research, conducted across organizations in 49 countries, revealed something fascinating:
Teams that intentionally use their strengths to collaborate are 12% more productive and 6 times more engaged than those that don’t.
Why?
Because when people understand what they naturally do best — and their leader knows how to harness those strengths — everyone begins to feel, “I truly matter here.”
When individuals see how their unique abilities contribute to the bigger picture, motivation doesn’t have to be forced. It grows naturally from a sense of purpose and belonging.
